Nigeria on Thursday recorded a total number of 381 new coronavirus cases in the country. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, made this known on its Twitter page on Thursday night. Lagos and Kano States recorded 183 and 55 cases respectively. With this development, Nigeria has a total of 3526 cases of the disease. NCDC wrote, “381 new cases of #COVID19; 183-Lagos, 55-Kano, 44-Jigawa, 19-Zamfara 19-Bauchi, 11-Katsina, 9-Borno, 8-Kwara, 7-Kaduna, 6-Gombe, 5-Ogun, 4-Sokoto, 3-Oyo 3-Rivers, 2-Niger, 1-Akwa Ibom, 1-Enugu and 1-Plateau State. “3526 cases of #COVID19 in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has disclosed that 22,000 Nigerians have been tested for coronavirus. NCDC Director General, Chikwe Ihekweazu made the disclosure during the daily press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, on Thursday. The NCDC DG said the body only made public the number of persons tested and not the number of tests conducted. Ihekweazue said those infected are made to undergo a series of tests which are not counted and updated into the system. He said: “The data shared is on people tested not on tests done. The data we share when we say we have about 22,0000 tested, those are on people tested, we don’t include all the series of tests. Every individual that is positive will have to be tested every three, four or five days. And some would have stayed in the hospital for about four weeks, so all those are tests being done as well and all of that are in the lab. “So, the numbers are really not fully representing the works being done ...

A former Senator representing Kogi-West senatorial zone, Senator Dino Melaye, has blamed himself and all Nigerian leaders, both past and present, as Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread across the country. According to Dino, everyone who held and is holding any political office in Nigeria, whether elective or appointed, including himself, has failed the good people of Nigeria in the fight against COVID-19. The 46-year-old politician claimed that Nigeria sold crude oil for 64 years, but its leaders could not feed Nigerians for just two weeks of the COVID-19 lockdown. Dino, in a tweet on his official Twitter page on Tuesday, wrote: “Everyone who held and is holding any political office in Nigeria whether elective or appointed including me have failed. “We sold crude oil for 64 years, but we couldn’t feed our citizens for just two weeks of lockdown!! Well, the god of the poor will judge us all. It’s time to reboot.”

A total of 245 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Nigeria on Monday. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, confirmed this in a post on its official Twitter page. With this development, the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus now stands at 2802. NCDC tweeted, “245 new cases of #COVID19; “76-Lagos, 37-Katsina, 32-Jigawa, 23-Kano 19-FCT, 18-Borno, 10-Edo, 9-Bauchi 6-Adamawa, 5-Oyo, 5-Ogun, 1-Ekiti 1-Osun, 1-Benue, 1-Niger and 1-Zamfara State. 2802 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in Nigeria “Discharged: 417, Deaths: 93.”

A total of fourteen States have recorded COVID-19 related deaths. As at Wednesday, the number of States with confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Nigeria has also increased to thirty-four. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, as of Wednesday night, April 29, confirmed 196 cases of COVID-19 in the country. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 1728. The General overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG) Pastor Enoch Adeboye has predicted a big fire outbreak in the country. Adeboye, who gave the warning during a live service on Sunday, also alerted Nigerians about impending flood. The cleric urged Nigerians to clear their gutters and pray God to avert the disaster. “If you have notice there have been different fire outbreak, we need to pray against fire incident because a big one is on the way. “Clear your gutters and pray against fire outbreak and flood there is little we can do but pray against flood. Governor Umar Ganduje has sacked the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Muazu Magaji, for rejoicing over the death of the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari. Mr. Magaji had while reacting to Kyari’s death in a Facebook post said Nigeria was now free. According to him, Abba Kyari had so much power that he decided the fate of Nigerians. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) donations had risen to N25.8 billion. CBN Director of Corporate Communications, Isaac Okoroafor, said in a statement on Friday. The donations were from 107 donors, including individuals, banks and other corporate bodies. The spokesman conveyed gratitude to all the institutions and individuals that have generously donated. “We urge others to consider contributing to this national solidarity to provide not only medical equipment and materials but also to render urgently needed palliatives to the poor and vulnerable segments of our society. “We hereby restate our commitment to full disclosure and accountability for all donations made,” he said.

The Nigerian presidency, Saturday morning, announced the death of the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari. Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, made the announcement in a statement. “The deceased had tested positive to the ravaging COVID-19, and had been receiving treatment. But he died on Friday, April 17, 2020. May God accept his soul. Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly”, he added. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Friday night, confirmed 51 new cases of COVID-19.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been warned against extending the Coronavirus lockdown. Buhari had in a nationwide broadcast, declared a 14-day lockdown of Abuja, Lagos and Ogun States which will expire next weekend. But as the expiration draws near, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has warned of the consequences of extending the lockdown beyond 14 days without proper palliative measures. CNPP said that if there must be an extension, the Federal and State Governments must make provisions for food and other necessities. The CNPP, in the statement also drew the attention of the federal government to the need to support local production of medical equipment and drugs to manage the Coronavirus pandemic rather than depend on the Chinese government for equipment and personal protective gears. The Federal Government on Friday hinted that the lockdown of States would end when citizens fully comply with preventive measures to curtail against COVID-19. Officially, Nigeria has recorded 190 cases of coronavirus and two deaths. The government noted that it would be difficult to defeat coronavirus if citizens failed to observe directives meant to safeguard themselves and others. Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, stated this in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said corpses of patients who test positive for COVID-19, will not be released to their families for burial. Speaking at a NAN forum in Abuja, Mohammed explained that such bodies would be handled by the Health Ministry because they are contagious. The Minister said: “Coronavirus is very dangerous and contagious; there is no medicine for it yet and it is not just capable of killing, overwhelming healthcare system, it will destroy the economy. "In some countries, they are putting dead bodies in big refrigerators, because the morgues have filled up. Nigerians should not forget that these are not the type of corpses that can be claimed for burial because it must be handled by the ministry of health.”

Lagos State government on Friday discharged four new COVID-19 patients in the State. The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, made this known during a press briefing on Friday. This brings to 24, the total number of discharged COVID-19 Patients in the country. Recall that the state on Thursday, discharged eleven coronavirus patients at the Infectious Disease Centre, Yaba Mainland Hospital. Sanwo-Olu, had said the patients, including two females and nine males tested negative.

The new cases were recorded in Lagos and Abuja.
